West Valley's Open Men closed out the 2015 cross country season on a high note finishing 20th overall at the USATF National Club XC Championships. In what has become an almost routine display, Malcolm Richards (26th overall) led the team with a 30:17 performance over the 10 km course through Golden Gate Park. The West Valley TC masters men had one goal this cross country season: a team podium finish at USATF X/C Club Nationals. Mission accomplished. Our guys finished second in the nation, behind a strong squad from Oregon’s Bowerman Elite, and ahead of a deep team from Boston Athletic Association. Throughout the cross-country season, the second-place West Valley women were led by Ibet Allan, Steph MacKenzie, and Nicole Campbell. However, heading into club cross-country nationals in San Francisco, the team would be without this formidable trio. They would need others to step up, and step up they did! This race was graced with great weather and beautiful, huge trees. The first half of the race was foggy, but the sun broke through as we headed back, and made the shade of the redwoods even more delightful. Even if it isn’t the fastest half I’ve ever run I’m really looking forward to doing it again next year, and maybe even camping out before the race like the men’s team.
